Things to do in Milwaukee

Milwaukee sits across the state line in Wisconsin, roughly an hour and a half north of Chicago by car or by the Amtrak Hiawatha train from Union Station, which puts it firmly in day-trip territory rather than a quick add-on to a Chicago itinerary.

It suits travelers who have already covered the Loop, Millennium Park and the Museum Campus and want a change of pace in a mid-sized American lake city on the same Lake Michigan shoreline, with its own brewing history, lakefront museums and neighborhood dining scene. It makes less sense on a short first visit to Chicago, where the round trip eats a large share of a single day.
