Best day trips from Chicago

Trips around Chicago fall into roughly three bands, and being honest about travel time is what makes or breaks the plan. The closest tier barely eats into the day at all: Millennium Park, the Riverwalk and Museum Campus sit minutes apart downtown, and Oak Park is about twenty minutes away on the Green Line - all comfortably combined into a single morning or afternoon. The middle tier covers the region's headline day trips: the Indiana Dunes are about an hour by car or the South Shore Line train, Milwaukee is roughly an hour and a half north on I-94 or the Amtrak Hiawatha, and Lake Geneva in Wisconsin sits about the same distance northwest.

Starved Rock State Park, at around an hour and forty minutes, rewards a full day with its sandstone canyons and spring waterfalls. The furthest tier turns a day trip into a genuinely long one: Galena, close to three hours west near the Mississippi, works best as an early start or an overnight rather than a rushed round trip.

A few practical points cut across every distance band: downtown Chicago has excellent transit, but most day trips beyond Oak Park and the Dunes are easiest with a rental car or Amtrak, since Metra's suburban network doesn't reach that far; several stops charge separate parking fees; and starting on the first realistic morning departure is usually the difference between a comfortable day and a rushed one.
